Guns/Property

Property including firearms recovered by any law enforcement agency may be required as evidence in any pending litigation. When no longer required, it is returned to the Mesa Police Department Recovered Property Unit. It is important that you keep the police department updated on any changes to your phone number or address, to facilitate the return of  your property. If the Recovered Property Unit is unable to contact someone regarding property, it will be disposed of as allowed by law.

Note on Guns

The Recovered Property Unit will not release weapons that are illegal. We will also not release guns to persons who are not legally permitted to possess firearms.

Civil Claims to Property

If the items is recovered from a pawnshop and the pawnshop elects to file a civil claim on the property, the police department will request  a civil hearing called an Interpleader in Mesa City Municipal Court. The hearing will determine ownership. The Recovered Property Unit will return the property as ordered by the court.
